Are you one of the countless women currently facing the profound and often emotionally challenging experience of hair loss? If so, you understand the deep impact it can have on your self-esteem and overall sense of well-being. If you’re feeling reluctant to step out into the world with your natural hair on display you may be considering a human hair wig to help you look and feel more like your vibrant and confident self.

If you’re curious about how to get used to wearing a wig and want to know if it will ever feel like a natural part of you, read on! In this article we will share the experience of one of our customers, Sally, who got used to wearing our pieces after losing her hair to alopecia.

As the brand most known for high-quality human hair wigs that look and feel like a real head of hair, Daniel Alain works with women every day who are coming to terms with their hair loss and finding solutions with our hairpieces. We hope that sharing real customers’ experiences will help you on your journey with hair loss and wig-wearing.

Tip #1: Find the right wig

It’s definitely worth mentioning that finding the right wig is more likely to end in success than trying to force yourself into the wrong wig. In order to find the perfect piece, we suggest working with a professional who takes the time to learn about your hair loss situation, takes measurements, offers you a range of options to try, and is there for post-purchase support should you need it.

Most people who end up wearing a wig aren’t wig experts at the beginning of their journey and they gain confidence and expertise either by doing things the right way or the wrong way. Sally was lucky enough to experience a first-class consultation with an expert who helped her find just the right piece.

“I had a great consultation with a stylist who steered me towards exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something that looked very natural and would be secure on my head under many circumstances,” she explains.

Tip #2: Wig comfort and fit

One of the most fundamental aspects of wig comfort is selecting the right size. Wigs come in various sizes, so measure your head circumference accurately and find a wig cap that fits within your range. Most high-quality wigs come with adjustable straps or hooks inside the cap that allow you to customize your fit and ensure it’s snug but not too tight.

Sally had a test of her own for the wig she purchased. “I needed to be able to shake my head upside down and have the wig stay on,” she laughs. “And sure enough, I went ahead and flipped over and it stayed right on!”

We advise working with a company who offers a wide range of cap sizes instead of a limited S,M,L range, and a generous return policy that allows you time to live with your piece for a few days to check comfort and fit over an extended period.

Tip #3: Lean on family and friends for support

One of the most valuable resources you have is the support of your family and friends. Their presence and understanding (not to mention their cheerleading!) can make a significant difference in how you navigate getting used to wearing a wig.

For Sally, it was her husband who provided the unconditional support of a trusted loved one. “Throughout this whole journey, my husband has been my rock,” she says. “He is absolutely phenomenal and he tells me every day that he loves me no matter what.”

Having the support of family and friends can help reduce any stigma of self-consciousness you may be feeling as you get used to a new look, especially in social situations. Even their honest feedback can be constructive so don’t be afraid to ask for help as you refine your style and learn to wear your wig.

Tip #4: Getting used to wearing a wig may take time

For Sally, not wearing a wig wasn’t an option while in the throes of total hair loss, and she decided she had to get used to it. “What was helpful for me was to refer to pictures of myself to understand where my natural hairline was,” she explains. “And that helped me learn where to place the wig on my head.”

As with any significant change in your appearance, there can be a learning curve and an adjustment period. It’s entirely normal to take time to get used to your new look. Sally suggests wearing your wig as much as possible in the beginning.

“I would wear it everywhere,” she says. “Especially if you’re finding it challenging. Just put it on as much as possible. Wear it when you’re in your house. Wear it outdoors. Wear it when you go to the grocery store and just stay positive!”

Tip #5: Build a wig-wearing habit

Sally leads an active life and is a personal trainer and coach. She has used much of her professional knowledge to help her get through some of the hardest times of her life. Ultimately, wearing a wig has had a positive impact on her well-being, but there were times when she had to dig deep into her soul to get through.

“I usually tell my clients when they’re trying to make a change in their life that it takes about 16 weeks to build a habit,” she says. “I reminded myself of this as I learned to get comfortable with my wig.”
