How to Measure Your Head to Find Your Wig Cap Size

Print/Save as PDF

A well-fitting wig is a statement in self-expression. An ill-fitting wig is a recipe for disaster. A random gust of wind or head-bobbing dance move could send a loose wig sailing across the room, while a too-tight wig can make your scalp feel like it's being suffocated. If you want to wear a wig comfortably and with confidence, you need to make sure it's the right size.

Getting your wig measurements right is crucial to find a wig that fits well. So your first step in this exciting process is measuring your head for a wig. Not sure where to start? We've got you covered. Grab your measuring tape and check out our wig cap size guide below!

Measuring your head for a wig

Luckily, learning how to measure for a wig is very simple and makes all the difference when ensuring the right fit. All you need is a soft measuring tape and a few free minutes.

No matter what wig cap size you discover you are, Daniel Alain has a bevy of realistic-looking, high-quality wigs that will fit your noggin like a glove. And to ensure that you always have the perfect fit, we'll even provide you with a fitting cap to properly record your exact wig measurements and 24/7 access to our wig-fitting experts.

Now—let's get measuring, shall we?

Circumference

circumference

Start by measuring the circumference of your head. To do this, wrap the measuring tape around your head, starting from your front hairline, moving over the tops of your ears, and then back under to the base of your neck (usually only an inch above your nape hairline). Be sure to keep the tape level and snug but not too tight.

Front To Nape

front-to-nape

Once you've got your head circumference measurement, it's time to measure from the base of your front hairline to the middle of your neck just below the occiput (usually around 1.5- to 2-inches).

Ear-Crown-Ear

ear-crown-ear

If you'll be wearing your wig pulled back in a ponytail or updo, it's important to also measure from ear to ear—over the crown of your head—and then back down to the bottom of your earlobe. This will help ensure that your wig doesn't sit too low on your head, revealing too much of your scalp.

Start from where your hairline starts above the ear (around 0.4-inches up from the ear) and measure up and over the crown of your head to about 0.4-inches above your other ear.

Ear-Front-Ear

ear-front-ear

You're not done with your ears just yet. Get these wig measurements starting at where your hairline starts at the top-front of your ears—think behind your sideburns—and measure up across your hairline on your forehead until you reach the top-front of your other ear. This will help ensure that your wig doesn't sit too low in the front.

Temple-Back-Temple

temple-back-temple

Your final measurement is from your temple—where the side of your head meets your forehead—across your forehead, following your front hairline, then back up to the other temple. All of these wig measurements will be used when you consult a handy wig size chart like this one from Daniel Alain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Know Your Wig Size?

Knowing your wig size is all about finding your wig cap measurement. Once you have that number, you can compare it to a wig size chart to find the perfect fit.

To measure your wig cap size, you'll need a soft measuring tape to find five key points around your head: circumference, front-to-nape, ear-to-ear across the forehead, ear-to-ear over top head, and temple-to-temple. You can consult our wig cap size chart here for more guidance.

Are There Wig Sizes?

Yes, generally, there are six wig cap sizes: XXS, XS, Small, Medium, Large, and XL. However, some wig companies may have slightly different sizing depending on the fit and intention of the wig. The best way to find your wig size is to measure your head and compare it to the chart of the wig you're thinking of purchasing.

What Is The Most Common Wig Size?

The average cap size is 21.25 to 22.5 inches, which for Daniel Alain ranges between a medium and an XL. But just like with clothing, one size does not fit all when it comes to wigs! The most important thing is to find the wig size that fits YOU.

Are Wigs 1 Size Fits All?

No—wigs are not one size fits all. In fact, it's important to find a wig that's the right size for your head, as an ill-fitting wig can be uncomfortable and cause slipping. Wigs that are too small may give you headaches, while wigs that are too large can droop or slide off.

How Are Wig Inches Measured?

Wigs are typically measured in inches, and the sizing is determined by five key points: circumference, front-to-nape, ear-to-ear across the forehead, ear-to-ear over top head, and temple-to-temple. Wig measurements are taken using a soft measuring tape, and the results are then compared to a wig size chart.

Are There Different Wig Sizes?

Yep! There are six different wig cap sizes: XXS, XS, Small, Medium, Large, and XL. Depending on the company, there may be slight variations in sizing, but overall, these are the standard wig sizes.

What Size Of Wig Do I Need?

The wig cap size you need will be determined by your five key head measurements. To find your wig size, simply take your measurements and compare them to the wig size chart of the piece you're interested in.

How Do I Know If A Wig Will Fit Me?

The best way to know if a wig will fit you is to take your measurements and compare them to the wig size chart. This will help you determine what size wig you need. Additionally, it's important to remember that not all wigs are one size fits all. Some wigs may run small or large, so it's also a good idea to try on the wig before purchasing it.

Are Wigs Supposed To Be Tight?

No, wigs should not be tight. They should fit snugly but comfortably around your head. If a wig is too tight, it can cause headaches and discomfort. If it's too loose, it may slip or droop. The best way to ensure a good fit is to take your measurements and compare them to the wig size chart.

What Is The Smallest Wig Size?

It varies depending on the company, but the smallest wig size is typically XXS. However, some companies may have wigs that run small or large, so it's always a good idea to try on the wig before purchasing it. Some companies design wigs specifically for children, so their sizing may be even smaller.

Why Does My Wig Look Bulky?

There are a few reasons why your wig may look bulky. If your wig is too large for your head, it may appear bulky. A well-fitting wig should be snug but comfortable around your head.

What If My Wig Is Too Big?

Wearing a wig that's too big can cause slipping and overall discomfort. If your wig is too big, try replacing it with a wig that's your actual size.

What's The Standard Wig Cap Size?

There is no standard wig size. Wig sizes vary depending on the company and the style of wig. The best way to find your wig size is to take your measurements and compare them to the wig size chart.

What Is A Wig Cap?

A wig cap is a piece of fabric that helps to hold a wig in place. It typically covers the entire head and has some sort of clip or fastener to keep it in place. Wig caps come in different sizes to fit different head shapes and sizes.

What Is The Point of A Wig Cap?

Wig caps help to keep wigs in place and can also help to create a more natural look by covering up your own hair. They also provide a protective layer between your hair and the wig. All wigs come with wig caps, and you can even buy an additional wig cap if you want more protection for your hair.

Is A Wig Cap Necessary?

Yes, wig caps are a necessary part of a wig's overall construction. They'll likely already be part of the wig, but you do have the option of purchasing a separate wig cap if you want more protection for your hair.
