How to Use Minoxidil for Hair Growth

Print/Save as PDF

After a few months of noticing hair loss symptoms — a widening part, thinning, bald patches, or clumps of hair falling out — and no luck covering them up with different hairstyles, fibers, or hats you’ve decided to try a hair loss treatment. You’ve heard promising success stories about Rogaine®, the most popular brand name of topical Minoxidil. Maybe you also took Daniel Alain’s Minoxidil Response Test (MRT), the only way to know if you have the necessary enzyme activity for the product to work.

The only problem? The instructions are long and confusing, and you’re unsure exactly how to use Minoxidil.

Veterans of the hair industry for over 20 years, we’ve helped people reclaim their confidence with clinically proven hair loss solutions for exquisite, full, amazing hair. We’ve familiarized ourselves with all of the products promising hair regrowth — the new, the old, the good, the bad, and the, well, you get the idea. While Minoxidil doesn’t work for everyone, it can be an effective treatment for those with androgenetic alopecia who have the ideal scalp environment, but more on that in a bit.

Today, we’ll help you learn how to use Minoxidil effectively with easy-to-follow application steps for liquid and foam solutions. Then, we’ll touch on some clinical findings that describe the main differences between the topical liquid and foam solutions. By the end of this article, you’ll know the essential first step on your hair loss journey.

But first, what is Minoxidil?

HOW TO USE MINOXIDIL FOR HAIR GROWTH

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved drug used to treat androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as male-and female-pattern baldness. The treatment comes in two forms: topical liquid and foam, which may increase hair density and promote hair regrowth in some people.

The generic form of Rogaine®, Minoxidil, is thought to promote blood flow to the scalp, sending hairs to the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle and keeping them there.

Clinical trials show that Minoxidil works for 50-60% of men and 30-40% of women.

However, clinical trial participants that experienced hair growth with Minoxidil had two things in common:

  • They had the SULT1A1 enzyme activity that activates Minoxidil and makes it effective.
  • They had guidance from experts and dermatologists to ensure they applied it correctly.

We’re here to lend support for both these factors. First, you can check if you have the essential enzyme activity with Daniel Alain’s MRT (Minoxidil Response Test) for men or women, the only diagnostic test to determine if Minoxidil will work for you. Second, keep reading to learn how to use Minoxidil properly to avoid any margin of error during application and give the product the best chance of success.

hOW TO APPLY MINOXIDIL

Before you apply Minoxidil, you’ll need to prepare your hair. Ensure your scalp is clean before application, but don’t wash your hair right before. Leave at least one hour between showering and applying Minoxidil, and make sure your hair is dry.

You can still use hair coloring, permanents, and relaxers while using Minoxidil treatments, so long as you wash your scalp at least 24 hours before applying.

There are two types of Minoxidil. Which one is best for you? When deliberating between the foam or liquid solution, studies show the two have virtually the same results. However, there are some differences in the application procedure and how your hair feels after.

How do you apply Minoxidil's topical liquid solution?  Let's take a closer look.

Liquid Solution

While it’s shown to be equally effective as the foam solution, research cited in the Indian Journal of Dermatology shows few adverse effects from the liquid solution. Minoxidil’s topical liquid solution contains propylene glycol, a solvent for the drug.

Unfortunately, the researchers linked above (and others) attribute the most adverse effects of Minoxidil to propylene glycol sensitivity. Some side effects include itching and contact dermatitis, an uncomfortably itchy and noticeable red rash that may appear on your scalp after use.

However, adverse effects aren’t common. Whenever you try a new product, we recommend consulting with your doctor.

Here's how to use Minoxidil topical liquid solution:

  1. Fill the applicator (dropper) until it contains 1 mL of the liquid solution.  If your doctor recommends a higher dose, fill it to the prescribed volume.
  2. If applicable, part your hair into a few sections.
  3. Apply the solution to the parts of your scalp showing symptoms of hair loss or thinning, starting with the middle of these problem areas.
  4. Gently rub the solution into your scalp with your fingers.
  5. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  6. Let the solution sit on your scalp and dry for at least four hours.

All done!  Make sure you read the label’s instructions carefully and follow the recommended or prescribed dosage.

Not a fan of the liquid solution? No worries. Let’s look at the steps to apply the foam solution.

Foam Solution

As mentioned in the research referenced above, Minoxidil’s foam treatment was introduced to address the liquid solution’s contact dermatitis (skin irritation) effects, likely because the foam solution doesn’t contain propylene glycol

In a study examining the frequency of itching in participants that took Rogaine®'s foam solution versus the liquid solution, chronic itching occurred in only 1.1 percent of participants who used the foam solution, versus 6.6 percent of participants using the liquid solution.

Below are some more noted benefits of the foam solution seen from the study:

  • Quick absorption
  • Less greasy feeling on the hair
  • Cleaner application (no dripping)

So, what is the best way to apply Minoxidil if you're using the foam solution?

Take note of the easy application steps below!

  1. Turn the cap so that the arrow on the can ring matches the arrow on the cap. Then, pull off the cap.
  2. If you have a lot of hair, create 4-5 parts in your hair so you can see the areas of your scalp displaying hair thinning.
  3. Rinse your hands with cold water and dry them before handling the foam. The solution might melt in your hands if your fingers are too warm.
  4. Press the nozzle slowly to dispense the foam onto your fingers.
  5. Starting from the back to the front, apply the foam to your hair loss areas, using your fingers to spread out the solution and massage the foam into your scalp.
  6. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  7. Let the solution sit on your scalp and dry for at least four hours.

What to Do After Applying Minoxidil

You’re almost done! Now, you just have to follow a few more steps for safety and optimal results.

  • Don’t use a blow dryer on the solution, even if your hair feels a little greasy. The heat might hinder the product’s effectiveness.
  • Avoid bringing your scalp in contact with anything for four hours, including your pillows or hats; Minoxidil leaves stains.
  • Don’t let the solution get in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If this happens, flush the solution out with water.
  • Wait four hours before washing your hair or using shampoo.

Now that you’re a pro at using and applying Minoxidil, the waiting game begins. Unfortunately, it can take 6-9 months to notice results.

However, you might notice excessive shedding followed by increased density in as little as three months. Nonetheless, your time is precious — is there a better way to know if Minoxidil will work for you? For the first time ever, yes!

Can I be tested to see if minoxidil will work for me?

Minoxidil Response Test | Daniel Alain

Daniel Alain’s Minoxidil Response Test (MRT) is the only product on today’s hair loss market that can tell you if your scalp has the right enzyme activity to respond to Minoxidil.

Backed by ten years of research, clinical studies, and peer review, the MRT tests your hair follicles in our CLIA-certified lab for SULT1A1 enzyme activity, the common denominator amongst clinical study participants who experienced hair growth while using Minoxidil.

The process is simple. Order and register your kit, collect hair samples, then send it to our lab, where we’ll test it for enzyme activity. You’ll know if you’re a Minoxidil responder in as little as one week! The MRT is an essential first step in getting ahead of your hair loss.

Frequently asked questions about minoxidil

What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved drug used to treat pattern and hereditary hair loss for men and women. A vasodilator, Minoxidil regrows and thickens hair in people who have the SULT1A1 enzyme activity by opening up the scalp’s blood vessels to receive oxygen and nutrients.

How Does Minoxidil Work?

Minoxidil is a vasodilator that’s thought to promote blood flow to the scalp, where follicles open to receive more nutrients required to enter a prolonged hair growth stage.

What is the Best Way to Apply Minoxidil?

Minoxidil’s application instructions vary depending on the type of solution you’re using: liquid or foam. Spread out the solution evenly with your fingers or the applicator and follow this guide’s instructions if you have any questions.

Do You Apply Minoxidil Daily?

Minoxidil treatments require twice-daily application for men and women. You might receive different dosage advice from your doctor, which you should follow.

What Happens if You Forget to Use Minoxidil?

If you forget to apply Minoxidil, experts recommend using it again as soon as you remember. But if your next dosage time is nearing, skip the one you missed and just continue with your regular schedule.

How Long Should I Leave Minoxidil in My Hair?

You should leave Minoxidil in your hair for 4 hours before wearing a hat, going to bed, or taking a shower.

Do You Have to Wash Your Hair Everyday When Using Minoxidil?

Yes. The ideal scalp for Minoxidil is dry and clean. And, if you’re using the Minoxidil liquid solution, daily hair washing might limit the chance of contact dermatitis and itching.

Can You Touch Your Hair After Applying Minoxidil?

After applying Minoxidil, you should wash your hands thoroughly. You shouldn’t touch your hair after because the solution can leave stains. Moreover, you should avoid getting Minoxidil in your eyes, mouth, or nose, an event that’s more likely if you have the solution on your hands.

Do You Have to Use Minoxidil Forever?

Minoxidil responders usually experience peak hair regrowth after one year. However, stopping the treatment may cause hair loss symptoms to resurface. Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, it’s best to use Minoxidil indefinitely.

Who Should Not Use Minoxidil?

You shouldn’t take Minoxidil if you have pheochromocytoma, an adrenal gland tumor. If you’ve been diagnosed with heart failure, angina, asthma, epilepsy, or other disorders, you should consult your doctor before using Minoxidil. Minoxidil’s effects on pregnant women aren’t yet apparent, though there’s no indication of adverse effects at this time. Still, consult your doctor if you’re pregnant or plan to be before taking Minoxidil.

Does Minoxidil Work For Everyone?

No, Minoxidil only works for people with androgenetic alopecia that have the SULT1A1 scalp enzyme activity. Studies show that Minoxidil only works for 30-40% of women and 50% of men.

Why Isn't Minoxidil Working for Me?

Your scalp might not have SULT1A1 enzyme activity, which is essential for Minoxidil to work. Without it, Minoxidil may never work.

How Do I Know if Minoxidil Will Work for Me?

The only way to know for sure if Minoxidil will work for you is to take the Men's or Women's Minoxidil Response Test.  Within 7-14 days, the test tells you if you have the SULT1A1 enzyme necessary to convert Minoxidil to its active form.  Otherwise, you'll have to apply treatments once or twice daily for 3 - 9 months and wait to see if you experience results.

How Does a Minoxidil Test Work?

The Minoxidil Response Test is easy and fast to use.

First, order and register your kit. Then, you collect some hair samples and send them to Daniel Alain’s lab. We’ll test your hair for the SULT1A1 enzyme and tell you if Minoxidil will work for you within 7-14 days.

How Much Does a Minoxidil Test Cost?

The Men's or Women's Minoxidil Response Test costs $139.00 plus applicable taxes and shipping costs.
