Jenn Brown has been wearing our human hair wigs for over two years and she has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. As a social media maven, Jenn enjoys testing the limits and pushing the boundaries of her wig-wearing, and there is no better person to help us answer some of the more common questions and concerns about how to wear a wig.
“When I started wearing wigs, I didn’t know what to expect or how they would impact my life. I thought wig-wearing would hold me back and that I wouldn’t want to be as active as I wanted to be. But boy, was I wrong.”
How long can you wear a wig?
You might have heard horror stories about uncomfortable, itchy wigs that you’re desperate to take off at the end of the day. We’ve heard those stories too, and we know you deserve better! That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating the most comfortable wigs in the world. We use the most luxurious Swiss lace to create lightweight, breathable wig caps that are kind and gentle to the skin.
Cheap wigs are made using lower-quality materials and are often stiff and irritating to the scalp. Some of our customers, like Jenn, wear their wigs all day every day, and we know our wigs need to measure up every single minute of the day.
“I work in a hospital as a Pediatric RN and I’m easily able to wear my Follea wig for an entire shift. I know it’s going to be safe and secure and most importantly, comfortable, on my head. The best wigs are the ones you reach for day in, day out,” explains Jenn.
How do you make wearing a wig more comfortable?
“When a wig fits correctly, it’s going to give you long-lasting comfort. Accurate measurements are key.”
Wig-wearing should be comfortable from the outset. Here at Daniel Alain, we offer a unique service that allows you to try out cap sizes, hair lengths, and hair colors before you purchase your wig, from the comfort of your own home.
Our experienced consultants can help you take accurate measurements and will send out Fit Kits that contain a range of caps (based on your measurements) for you to try. We recommend wearing the caps around your house for an hour or two as you try them for size. Wearing them for an extended period will give you some idea about how the wig will fit and feel on your head in the long term. We aim for maximum comfort and expect that once you get used to wearing your new wig, it’s so comfortable, you’ll forget it’s even there.
It’s also important to remember that proper care and maintenance of your wig will ensure it remains comfortable to wear. As with bio hair, your human hair wig will need to be washed regularly to remove any dirt or build-up of styling products. “Putting on a fresh, clean wig feels incredible. You can’t help but have an extra bounce in your step.”
How do you keep a wig from falling off?
A common yet justified concern for first-time wig-wearers is whether their wig will fall off. Nobody wants to be caught in an embarrassing situation and we strive to make sure our wigs are properly fitted and completely secure.
“Working around kids in the hospital as they’re tugging and pulling on my hair is the perfect test. My wig hasn’t fallen off once,” says Jenn. “Knowing your wig is secure is very important. If you’re relaxed about wearing a wig, your confidence will shine through.”
Knowing your wig fits properly gives you the confidence you live life to the max. Our consultants can guide you through finding a properly fitting cap.
Some things to look out for: find a wig cap that fits correctly around your ear (and not on your ear). There should be roughly a finger’s width between your ear and the wig cap. A wig should not feel tight around your temples or cause tension headaches. Equally, the wig cap should not be too big or create an air pocket at your crown.
“It might sound surprising, but in my wig, I can ride a roller coaster and jump on a trampoline with my daughter. When you know your wig will stay on, you get to live every second of your life.”
For added security, some people opt to wear a wig grip under their wig. Wig grips are typically made of velvet and secure around the head like a headband. The velvet pile is designed to grip the underside of the wig cap and offer added security and prevent shifting. While not always necessary, wig grips are a great option for some people.
How do you travel with your wig?
Traveling can be stressful even at the best of times, but when you’re new to wearing wigs, it can seem especially overwhelming. We asked Jenn to break down some myths about air travel and navigating TSA whilst wig-wearing.
“People often ask me about the metal clips on my wig because they worry they’ll set off the metal detector alarms at the airport. The first time I traveled with a wig, I had exactly the same concerns.”
“My wigs have never set off a metal detector, even the ones that have metal clips or combs.
TSA has never asked me to remove my wig, even though they could. TSA agents are trained to identify wigs and hairpieces, but if they ask you to remove your wig, you can request a private screening room to do so.”
When packing wigs for travel, at Daniel Alain we recommend using the velvet pouch that comes with every purchase. This will ensure your wig stays safe and tangle-free. We also recommend carrying the wigs in your hand luggage so you can be sure you always have it with you.
