What is the Cost of Minoxidil?

Print/Save as PDF

When hair loss starts, you start looking for solutions. While researching potential solutions, you’ve most likely come across Minoxidil, also referred to as Rogaine®. Minoxidil is the only topical FDA-approved hair loss drug. However, Minoxidil does not come without problems despite having a lot of positives. While many people have seen success with Minoxidil, its biggest drawback is that, if Minoxidil works for you, you have to use it indefinitely. Like any drug, if you stop taking Minoxidil it stops working.

At Daniel Alain, we strive to offer a 360-approach to hair loss. From hair shedding treatments to human hair wigs, we offer different solutions to the different stages of hair loss. If Minoxidil works for you, it can be an excellent and easy solution to regrow your hair.

In this article, we’re going to outline the potential costs associated with Minoxidil treatments to help you determine whether it is a solution you want to invest your time and money in. By the end of this article, you’ll have a firm understanding of the cost of Minoxidil over time.

The Lifetime Cost of Minoxidil

While Minoxidil may be one of the most popular hair loss treatments on the market, it is only FDA-approved to treat androgenetic alopecia, also referred to as male or female pattern hair loss. This genetic hair loss often begins earlier in men and is typically seen in women after menopause. However, it can begin at any time, as early as the late teens or 20s

In the short term, Minoxidil may seem like a fairly inexpensive option, especially if you opt for a subscription service that can give you a larger amount of the product at a lower price point. According to GoodRx, an American health company that tracks drug prices, the average cost of topical Minoxidil is $28.84. Because Minoxidil is applied twice a day, every day, on average, a bottle of Minoxidil will last a month. For a year of Minoxidil, the cost is approximately $346.08.

If you see results from Minoxidil, you have to keep using Minoxidil or your hair will begin to fall out again. Let’s say you are 32 and plan on using Minoxidil for another 20 years, you would spend almost $7,000 paying for Minoxidil treatments. Even if you only use Minoxidil for a year, you could spend $346.08 and never see any results from Minoxidil.

In previous articles, we’ve outlined why Minoxidil may not be showing results. The biggest reason Minoxidil may not work for you, even if you have androgenetic alopecia, is because you do not have enough of the SULT1A1 enzyme needed to convert Minoxidil into its active form. Essentially, this means that no matter how long you use Minoxidil, without this enzyme, you will never see results.

Minoxidil only works for 30-40% of women and 50% of men.

How Do I Know If Minoxidil Will Work?

After reading this article, you may be wondering if there’s any way that you could avoid spending money on a treatment that may not work for you. How can you know if you have the enzyme that’s needed to activate Minoxidil?

The research and development team at Daniel Alain discovered how to test for the SULT1A1 enzyme. The Minoxidil Response Test uses just six strands of hair, allowing the team to analyze your hair to see if Minoxidil will work for you. The Minoxidil Response Test is a one-time cost of $139 which is less than half a year’s worth of Minoxidil. If you are not a responder, you can save your money and spend time searching for a solution that will work for you. If you are a responder, you can confidently proceed with treatments, knowing you will see results within 6-9 months.

If you’re ready to learn whether Minoxidil will be a worthwhile investment, order the Minoxidil Response Test to get answers and take control of hair loss.
